Alison first arrived in Brazil in 1979 with the task of setting up the new Oxford University Press office in Rio de Janeiro. Returning to the UK in 1984 she never lost her love of the country, the music or the travel and made sure that subsequent jobs in publishing, consulting and representing language schools included a good marketing excuse to return ever year.
In 2002 she came back to Rio permanently and now lives in Leblon.
The Hidden Pousadas Brazil project arose out of stress when, having just finished running a huge cello festival in Rio, Alison asked a friend for advice on where to chill out for a week. He recommended thePousada Santa Clara, a small inn on the tropical palm fringed island of Boipeba in Bahia. It was there, sitting on the beach at sunset sipping caipirinhas that Alison realised not only that a wonderful alternative existed in Brazil to anonymous hotels and resorts, but that foreigners, who would certainly love them, had no idea they existed. She set up Hidden Pousadas Brazil in 2008 to promote the best of these pousadas throughout Brazil (eco-lodges, boutique hotels, guesthouses, Inns and bed & breakfasts) and to share a small bit of the paradise she had found with other independent travellers.
